TECHNOLOGY AND THE LAW: WE NEED YOUR HELP! Wireless microphones are an essential part of modern musical theatre productions. Contemporary performers rely on these devices to bring the story to the audience, allowing the singers to be heard over a live orchestra or band with stunning clarity. Without them, the sound quality and style of Theatre A La Carte’s musicals would not be possible. Unfortunately, wireless microphones have some competition. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is the government agency that regulates the wireless radio frequency spectrum and, since wireless microphones transmit and receive by radio waves, they are regulated by the FCC. A great majority of wireless audio devices operate in the 700 MHz radio frequency band. This band is particularly useful due to its ability to transmit large amounts of information, and its ability to penetrate walls. However, the FCC has reallocated the 700 MHz band for public safety use, and for certain wireless service companies. The audio industry has known this to be a major issue for some time now. This will cost consumers a lot of money, as they now need to upgrade to wireless devices operating in a different frequency band. Despite many petitions on behalf of the audio industry, as of June 12, 2010, all wireless microphones operating in the 700 MHz radio band were to cease operation due to interference. Unfortunately, most of Theatre A La Carte’s wireless microphones, and others that were frequently borrowed, operated in the re-allocated band. Last year we purchased several new wireless microphones which operate legally in a new frequency band, but this is only half the number of microphones we frequently require for a production. How can you help? The microphones we use cost nearly $800 each and are a professional model that ensures many years of reliable use. Your donation toward the purchase of these systems will help us reach our goal of complying with the law while giving you the best sounding shows possible. Donations can be made by check or credit card, and are tax-deductible. Contact us at (850) 385-6700 to help. -Zach Cramer |
